Radio & Pager Charging

What every charger light means, how to start and stop a reconditioning cycle, and why a few of our batteries fight the charger. Worked out on the bench, August 2026.

Bree's radio solved · one battery to replace, not a fleet

Most people only need the first card. Everything below it is for whoever is holding the meter.

Two separate problems landed in the same week and looked related. They were not. The radio was a battery that cannot talk to an IMPRES charger. The pagers are a documented Motorola contact defect. Keeping them apart is most of the work.

Charging, the short version

If you only read one part of this, read this part.

  1. Turn the radio off. A powered radio keeps drawing current and never charges properly.
  2. Set it in the charger with the battery still attached. That is normal and how the pocket is designed.
  3. Wait for solid green. That means full.
  4. Do not pull it early. If the light is red, it is still working.

If the light goes yellow, the charger is running a maintenance cycle on the battery. On a genuine Motorola battery that is normal and healthy. Leave it alone, it can take overnight, and it will go green on its own.

If the light blinks, or it has been in all day and still is not green, hand it in. Do not keep cycling it.

Pagers

Same idea, with one addition: wipe the contacts on the bottom of the pager once a month. Motorola's own answer to pagers that will not charge is debris in that connector, so this is the single most useful habit on the pager fleet.

Charger lights

Motorola's published IMPRES indicator table, in the order you are most likely to see them. The last row is not in that table.

Will not charge, or not making proper contact. Reseat it first. If it stays flashing red, treat the battery as bad.
Steady yellow
Reconditioning or initialising. IMPRES batteries only. Runs up to 12 hours. Counterintuitively a fully charged pack takes longer than a flat one, because the discharge phase has further to go.
Flashing red/green
Fully charged and still usable, but nearing the end of its rated service life. Flag it for replacement.
Flashing green/yellow
Not in Motorola's published table. Reported on the newer chargers including our PMPN4527A. Means charged, but the charger still wants to recondition. On a genuine pack it says the capacity gauge needs resyncing. On an off-brand pack it is simply as far as it will ever get.

Reconditioning

There is no button. It is the same physical move in both directions, and the light colour decides which one you get.

To start one

Charger on steady red

Within 2.5 minutes of first inserting the battery, pull it out and put it back within 5 seconds. It flips to steady yellow and begins.

To stop one

Pull it out and put it back within 5 seconds. It flips to steady red and charges normally.

Stopping is per insertion, not a setting. Motorola's wording is "the charger will attempt to recondition the battery at the next battery insertion." A pack the charger keeps flagging will ask again every single time it touches the pocket.

Do not force a recondition as routine maintenance. Motorola's use case for the manual start is packs coming out of long storage, and they warn that overusing it shortens battery life.

What it actually does

Reconditioning was invented for NiCd batteries, where the memory effect is real. Shallow discharges grow crystals on the plates, a deep discharge cycle breaks them down, and you genuinely recover capacity.

Our entire fleet is lithium ion, which has no memory effect. Capacity loss in lithium comes from irreversible chemistry, and no charge cycle undoes any of it. A recondition cannot give back a single mAh.

What it does do is calibrate the fuel gauge. The chip in the pack estimates remaining capacity by counting current in and out, and that estimate drifts. Running the pack to empty and back to full gives it two known reference points to re-anchor against. The benefit is honest reporting, not more runtime.

That is still worth having. The end-of-life warning is the actual product, and it is only as trustworthy as the capacity measurement behind it. Without periodic calibration we either scrap good batteries or carry bad ones, and finding out on a call is the expensive way to learn.

How often should it happen?

There is no interval, and that is deliberate. Each pack stores its own charge and recondition history, and the charger reads that history on insertion and decides on the spot. Our only real policy is: leave batteries in the charger and let the charger decide, and when it goes yellow, leave it until green.

Worth checking: if members habitually grab a radio off the charger before it is green, reconditioning never completes on any of them, and after a few years every pack in the fleet is carrying stale capacity data. Costs nothing to fix. It is a two sentence item at a meeting.

The two 0102 codes

Different faults · different fixes · easy to confuse

This one cost us a wrong turn toward reprogramming a codeplug that was never broken.

Recondition Battery / Service Code 0102

The e-series four digit Service Code format. This is battery data. The radio is reading the pack's chip and reporting that it says reconditioning is due. There is no radio-side reset, no menu, and no power cycle fix, because the state lives in the battery rather than the radio.

ERROR 01/02

Something else entirely, from the legacy power-up error table in the service manual:

How to tell them apart at a glance: a slash means codeplug, it is a power-up error. "Service Code" plus four digits means battery.

Off-brand batteries

Roughly half our portables have run Cut-Rate packs for about five years with no complaints. This is not a brand panic. It is one specific product tier that fights the charger.

IMPRES is a proprietary Motorola protocol. The charger negotiates with a chip in the pack and writes a measured capacity figure back into it. Aftermarket "Smart" packs reverse engineer that chip. Getting recognised is the easy half. Completing the calibration write-back is the half that matters, and that is where they break.

What it looks like on the bench

The signature observed on Bree's radio, running a Cut-Rate M412L2-A:

So the stop-the-recondition move takes two replugs on that pack, not one, and it passes through the flashing red "bad battery" indication on the way. Anyone who does not know that will stop at flashing red and assume the battery is dead.

Proven, not assumed

Swapping a genuine Motorola IMPRES pack into the same radio cleared the message immediately, and the fault followed the battery across two different chargers. The radio and the chargers are both healthy.

What that tier is worth buying

Cut-Rate's "Smart" is their most expensive option at $105, above their own non-smart 2500 mAh at $68 and in the same band as the genuine part. It buys emulated IMPRES, no published IP68 rating, and no verified capacity telemetry.

On a portable that goes into a structure, the battery is the back of the radio and part of its sealed envelope, so the water rating is not a spec sheet nicety. Buy genuine for anything that leaves the hall.

Pagers

Nothing from the radio diagnosis carries over

Minitor VI batteries are not IMPRES. No chip, no negotiation, no reconditioning, no calibration. A pager battery either charges or it does not.

Motorola documented a real charging defect in Technical Notification MTN-0080B-17-NA, and our exact pager, A03JAC9JA2AN, is on the affected model list.

Check both parts, not just the pager

On the pager

Concave pins

I/O connector with concave pins, built before June 2015. The revised part has flat pins.

On the charger

Date code 5151 or earlier

Single Unit Charger RLN6505A, date code engraved on the base. Compare the number directly rather than trying to decode it.

Concave pins with a newer charger means the pager alone needs work. Concave pins with an older charger means both do.

The remedy is free, and Motorola says do it regardless of revision: clean the pager's I/O connector, monthly. That is the cheapest preventive win available on the pager fleet, and it needs no technical framing to hand to a member. The no-charge connector replacement the bulletin describes has expired, so treat the rest of it as diagnostic guidance only.

The two-slot clue

The charger has a pocket for the whole pager and a separate slot for a bare battery. If a pack charges fine in the bare slot but not with the pager in the pocket, that is not a battery fault.

It proves the cells and the protection circuit are healthy, and it narrows the problem to the pager path: base contacts, the pager's charge circuit, and the pager's internal battery contacts, all of which the bare slot bypasses.

How to diagnose

Swap one variable at a time against a known-good unit. Two swaps isolate almost anything to the battery, the charger, or the device.

Resist theorising before swapping. A ten minute bench session beats an hour of plausible reasoning, and both of these faults were settled by a swap rather than by an explanation.

The bigger issue is age, not brand.

About half our portables are running packs that are roughly five years old. Five year old lithium is past service life whatever name is on it, realistically down around 60 to 70 percent of original capacity. That is a readiness problem worth budgeting for, and it argues for retiring packs on an age schedule instead of waiting for complaints.
